How Does Bridal Sizing Work?

April 9

Most bridal shops are special order shops, which means that your gown is not made until it is ordered. We sample each style in one sample size (usually size 10-12, or plus size 16-24) and clip to get an idea of the structure and fit of the gown.
Once you find your dream dress, your bridal consultant, who is professionally trained to measure you, will measure your bust, waist, and hip and go over that particular designer’s size chart with you.

You will ultimately have the final call on what size you feel most comfortable ordering, so here are a few things in mind when doing this:
· Each designer has their own size chart and they are all different. You may be a 6 in one designer’s dresses and a 10 in another.
· Bridal sizes typically run at least 1-2 sizes smaller than regular clothes.(This is because in the bridal industry, “Vanity Sizing” is not used.
· Although you may be aiming to lose weight before your wedding, you should always consider the largest measurement on your body and what size that puts you in, and have it taken in through any other areas.
· You can always take a dress in a few inches, but you may not have enough seam allowance to let it out enough if you go too small.
· The gowns will come in a standard length and are hemmed later in alterations, unless you are a taller bride, in which case extra length is available.

It is very unlikely that you will pick up your gown and not require any alteration because every bride is shaped differently. Alterations usually run from $300-$500. At Brickhouse Bridal, we have a wonderful list of trusted seamstresses in the Houston and Woodlands area who would do an excellent job on your gown.

Here is a great example from Watters on how to properly take your measurements.
